Unit １　数字の読み方
ここでは数字の読み方を練習します。日本語ではもちろん知っているでしょう。でも英語では意外に知らないことがあります。また正確にスペルが書けないこともあるでしょう。しっかり基礎を固めてください。理科系の英語の基礎となります。
 
本文の意味
エンジニアや科学者は英語で数が表現できたほうがよい。ほとんどの日本の学生は1から100までは数えることができる。しかしこの後、問題が生じる。たとえば、科学者は大きな数を10の累乗で表す。これは便利だ。なぜなら数の大きさを一目で分かることが可能だからだ。
 
以下の質問に英語で答えよう。

Unit 2  自然数
本文の意味
古代ギリシャの数学者たちは数論の基礎を築いた。彼らは主に自然数(1,2, 3)を研究し、それらについての多くの面白い事実を発見した。彼らが証明した面白い定理の一つに、無限の＊1数の素数がある、というものがある。素数とは、1とその数だけで割り切れる数のことである。それを証明するのに彼らは背理法＊2を使った。彼らは最初に証明したいことの反対を仮定した。つまり、彼らは、有限の数の素数しかないと仮定した。彼らはそれから矛盾を引き出した。このやり方で素数の数が本当に無限であることを証明した。
 
 　（＊1） 英語の発音は infinite [infinit], finite [fainait] となるので注意。
 （＊2） 「背理法」という語が分からない場合は「間接的な証明法」でもよい。
